For over 50 years, the Society of African Missions (SMA) has been present in Bélémboke, a remote rural mission serving predominantly Pygmy communities in the forest regions of the Central African Republic. The people of this area live in conditions of extreme poverty, marked by deep geographical isolation and long-standing social marginalization. Access to essential services such as healthcare, education, pastoral support, and humanitarian assistance remains severely limited, making daily life a constant struggle for many families.
In this challenging context, the SMA mission plays a vital role in both spiritual and human development. Alongside evangelization and sacramental ministry, the mission is deeply engaged in humanitarian outreach. This includes regular pastoral visits to outstations and forest settlements, emergency assistance to vulnerable families, and support for basic healthcare referrals. The mission also accompanies catechists and community leaders, helping to strengthen local structures of faith and solidarity
Practical support is a key part of the mission’s presence. The transport of food, medicines, and relief materials to hard-to-reach communities is often lifesaving. Through this integrated pastoral and humanitarian approach, the SMA mission in Bélémboke continues to stand with some of the most marginalized people in the country, offering hope, dignity, and accompaniment in the midst of profound hardship.
